Kayla A Modern Day Princess Dishes, Dancing and Dreams

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2022 #ReadYourWorld

Welcome to the Ink-A-Dink Blog--What a great day to launch!

I am honored to have been asked to share one of the latest titles by author Deedee Cummings, author and founder of Make a Way Media, and also a MCBD supporter since its beginnings, and this year's Super Platinum Sponsor, helping to make this annual book event possible.

Kayla meets a new neighbor, makes a new friend, and helps someone through a tough situation. Divorce and family dynamics are handled well, emotionally sensitive to the age group of the readers, and carries an inspirational message readers will be able to apply in real-life situations.

An early-reader picture book and the latest in a five-book series, Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess. Each book in the series teaches social-emotional learning skills (SEL), while the bright illustrations and reader-sensitive text lighten any tough themes, and each book carries a positive take-away message for the reader.

The series also serves to help young readers identify their feelings and emotions, and that they are not alone in their feelings.

Diversity in the series is shown organically through the illustrations, and each book also touches on tough topics, as in divorce, in Dishes, Dancing and Dreams, when Kayla meets a new neighbor, makes a new friend, and helps someone through a tough situation.

Divorce and family dynamics are handled well, emotionally sensitive to the age group of the readers, and carries an inspirational message readers will be able to apply in real-life situations.

Additional Series Description:

Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess is a heartwarming story about family, role models, dreams, and discovering a determination for growth. This five-part diverse picture book series shines the spotlight on a little brown girl who loves musical theatre and never lets anything get in the way of her dreams. It seems that everyone else has an idea for who she should be, but in the end, she discovers that she is the one who gets to decide.

The story also reveals the very special family dynamic that Kayla shares with her mom- a hard-working woman who struggles with the guilt of not being as available for her young daughter as she would like. But as the story progresses, Kayla and her mom realize the impact of valuing the time they have together as well as the importance of seeing each other acknowledge (and pursue) their individual dreams.

Make A Way Media and author Deedee Cummings donate 10% of all book sales to It Pays to Read and the Louisville Book Festival.  These programs literally pay children to read, highlight the importance of literacy every day of the year, and donate hundreds of books each year to churches, schools, children, and families in need.

Now in its 9th year, Multicultural Children's Book Day (MCBD) celebrates diversity in children's books, a non-profit reading initiative that collaborates with authors and publishers to get free diverse children's books into the hands of young readers. Founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on multicultural books and authors while also working to get more of these books into the hands of young readers and educators.
